Cathelco’s Ultrasonic Technology wins ‘Technology of The Year’ award

Cathelco’s Ultrasonic Biofouling Management system received notable recognition at the Maritime Decarbonisation Awards in Amsterdam, securing the ‘Technology of The Year‘ award. This distinction underscores Cathelco’s dedication to addressing the critical issue of marine biofouling in the maritime sector.

Tackling the global challenge of marine biofouling

Marine biofouling poses a substantial operational challenge. It leads to heightened drag on vessels, causing an uptick in fuel consumption and GHG emissions. To provide context, a 180-meter vessel could see additional fuel costs of up to £7.21 million over five years due to fouling. This translates to an added environmental burden of 48,000 tons of CO2 emissions.

Beyond the direct operational and environmental effects, fouling introduces the risk of transporting invasive aquatic species to unfamiliar waters. Such invasions can disrupt local marine ecosystems. Given the evolving stringent global regulations, vessels with fouling may confront entry restrictions in certain ports, leading to operational setbacks and associated financial implications.

Our award-winning and patented technology marks a fresh direction in biofouling management. Coupled with our broader product line, Cathelco aspires to deliver a holistic marine protection solution.”

Cathelco’s vision for the future

In light of these challenges, Cathelco is bringing to market the award-winning Ultrasonic Biofouling Management system. By keeping the hull of a ship clean, our innovative system contributes to 30-40% savings in fuel consumption, presenting the maritime industry with a potential avenue for annual savings nearing 15 billion Euros.

Chris Hewitt, Cathelco’s Product and Technical Manager, commented, “Our system is poised to offer distinct advantages over existing ultrasound solutions. It’s being crafted to cater to diverse vessels with easy installation and promises comprehensive protection against a spectrum of marine species.”

Dr. Sasha Heriot, Product Manager at Cathelco, further noted, “Our award-winning and patented technology marks a fresh direction in biofouling management. Coupled with our broader product line, Cathelco aspires to deliver a holistic marine protection solution.”
