Cathelco joins BEMA to support progress in biofouling management

Cathelco has joined the Ballastwater & Environmental Manufacturers’ Association (BEMA), an international organisation that plays a key role in how the maritime industry approaches biofouling management. This affiliation strengthens our ability to contribute to the development of practical, effective solutions that support both vessel performance and marine environmental protection.

Biofouling has rapidly become one of the most important topics in shipping. It affects fuel use, emissions, operational reliability and the spread of aquatic invasive species. As regulations evolve and national requirements become more common, it is essential that technical expertise is represented in the conversations shaping global guidance. With NGO consultative status at the International Maritime Organization (IMO), BEMA has become one of the sector’s most influential voices.

Within BEMA, the Biofouling Subcommittee brings together manufacturers, service providers and technical specialists to support:

  • the development of IMO guidance for in-water hull cleaning systems
  • practical and workable approaches to biofouling policy
  • technical insight for regulators and industry bodies
  • open knowledge sharing across the fouling-control community

Joining this group allows us to share our experience in fouling control, contribute to emerging policy discussions and support the industry as expectations continue to rise.

Our focus remains the same

For healthier oceans
Reducing biofouling helps limit the transfer of aquatic invasive species and supports global environmental protection.

For better hulls
Cleaner hulls improve fuel efficiency, reduce drag and give operators more predictable performance.

For lower emissions
Less drag means lower fuel consumption, supporting decarbonisation efforts without adding operational complexity.

For easier maintenance
Good biofouling management reduces unnecessary workload and helps crews avoid avoidable issues.

For better business
Efficiency, reliability and consistency contribute directly to better operations and lower overall costs.

By working within BEMA’s Biofouling Subcommittee, we aim to support solutions that deliver these outcomes across the industry. As biofouling continues to draw global attention, we look forward to contributing actively to the development of cleaner, more effective management practices.
