Evac’s HTC technology listed among the top 30 circular innovations in Europe

Evac Group has been recognized as one of 30 European companies on the Circular Solutions for Nature list released today at the World Circular Economy Forum in Brussels.

The Circular Solutions for Nature list, created by Sitra, the Finnish Innovation Fund, showcases practical examples of circular business models that tackle biodiversity loss and generate new businesses.

One of the top 30 European innovations listed, Evac HydroTreat®, leads the shift towards circular waste management in the maritime industry. Evac HydroTreat uses hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) to replace the conventional way of incinerating waste onboard passenger ships. This sustainable solution enables the operators to turn their wet waste, biosludge and food waste into biochar – the sole byproduct of the entire process that can be upcycled to re-enter food production as a soil amendment.

“Waste management is often dismissed as something that happens if other circularity efforts have failed. However, some waste, such as bio sludge, is inevitable, and efforts to extract more value from these streams are of great importance,” says Sitra’s Riku Sinervo, Senior Lead, Global collaboration, Sustainability solutions.

“We are grateful and proud of this recognition of our efforts to empower the maritime industry in its transition to the circular economy. Evac HydroTreat enables our customers to future-proof their installations to meet current regulations and beyond. We are also excited to see rapidly growing interest in HydroTreat on land,” says Björn Ullbro, CEO of Evac Group.

The circular economy eases the pressure we put on the environment by transforming waste into a valuable resource. This reduces the need for new materials, leaving more room for nature to thrive. The companies on the Circular Solutions for the Nature list represent sectors that play a vital role in tackling biodiversity loss. The list includes companies from eight European countries: Denmark, Portugal, Sweden, Finland, the UK, the Netherlands, Belgium and Greece.
