Corrosion protection systems for wind farms

Our Cathelco corrosion protection systems, based on impressed current cathodic protection (ICCP) technology, have many advantages compared to more traditional sacrificial anode systems. In addition to being more economical to install, ICCP systems can be managed from a shore base, providing an easily verifiable way of ensuring that they are providing reliable corrosion protection.

Lower installation costs

Our Cathelco ICCP equipment and installation costs are significantly lower than the equivalent costs for sacrificial anodes. Because the ICCP equipment is much lighter than sacrificial anodes, it can be positioned manually to avoid the use of cranes. Furthermore, the fixing points require much less time to install than for sacrificial anodes.

Manageable from onshore

The performance of our Cathelco ICCP system can be checked and controlled from an onshore control room around the clock. The system is also easy to monitor using a computer. If the environment below the waterline changes, the ICCP system can be immediately adjusted to take account of this. Additionally, a record can be kept of the system’s performance, demonstrating the integrity of the foundations. This avoids the time and expense of carrying out offshore surveys.

Seabed penetration

Our Cathelco ICCP systems have a much higher driving voltage than sacrificial anodes, allowing the current to reach a depth of up to five meters below the seabed (mudline). This extends the corrosion protection to the buried foundations of the structure and combats microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC).

Lower weight and drag than sacrificial anodes

In a typical application, 30–60 tons of sacrificial anodes and their mountings are replaced with just one ton of ICCP equipment. Another important factor is that our Cathelco surface-mounted anodes present significantly less drag than the higher number of offset sacrificial anodes.

Lower maintenance costs

All our Cathelco offshore wind turbine anodes are ROV diver changeable, saving time, effort, and money during maintenance. The design life of the anodes is up to 30 years.

Suitable for all types of wind turbine foundations

    By mounting the anodes and reference electrodes externally, the problems associated with traditional cofferdam installations are eliminated.

    The tubular design of the ICCP element results in a very compact anode, which combines a small footprint with a high current output.

    The ICCP anodes can be positioned more easily to achieve the optimum current distribution, without the risk of “shading”.

    Anodes and reference electrodes are fitted using self-torqueing fastenings for speed and accuracy.

    The system can be monitored and controlled remotely using Cathelco software.
